Why we expanded the mushroom edibles selection

For most of the last two years, the mushroom shelf at our Lien Road store was a shelf. One brand, a couple of flavors, and a lot of customers asking whether we carried anything else. We do now. The mushroom edibles category has grown faster than almost anything else on the floor, and the questions coming across the counter have gotten more specific: people are not asking if we carry mushroom products, they are asking which format suits them and how the formats differ.

So we built the selection out along the lines customers actually shop. Four formats, stocked deep enough that you are not choosing between two things. If you have been buying mushroom edibles online and hoping for the best, the point of this expansion is that you can now stand in front of the whole category in Madison, read the panels, and ask a human being what the difference is.

Format one: mushroom gummies

Gummies are where most people start, and they are the largest part of our mushroom edibles selection. They are the easiest format to buy for the first time because the serving is already decided for you — one gummy is one gummy, and the count and total blend weight are printed on the pack.

We stock gummies at three different scales:

• Two-count packs starting at $6.95. A single-session pack, priced so you can try a flavor without committing to a jar.
• Standard eight-count packs at $24.95, which is the workhorse of the category and where most of our flavor range lives — Blue Raspberry, Strawberry, Watermelon, Green Apple, Pineapple, Rocket Pop, Sunset Punch and Cotton Candy.
• Twenty-count jars at $34.95 for people who have already found a blend they like and want the per-piece price to come down.

Format two: mushroom edibles you eat — chocolate, drops and tabs

Past gummies, the mushroom edibles selection splits into three eating formats that behave differently from each other.

Chocolate bars

Bars run $19.95 and are scored into eight squares, so the bar is both the package and the portion guide. We carry them in milk chocolate, dark chocolate orange, cookies and cream, and strawberry crunch. Chocolate is the format to reach for if the texture of a gummy is the part you do not like, and it is the easiest of the mushroom edibles to share honestly — everyone can see exactly how much of the bar is left.

Chocolate drops

Drops are the same idea in a smaller piece — $24.95 for a bag of individually portioned chocolates rather than a scored bar. They travel better than a bar in a Wisconsin July, and they solve the problem of a half-eaten bar rattling around a glovebox.

Dissolvable tabs

Tabs are the newest addition to the mushroom edibles shelf and the one that is genuinely different. Ten tablets per tin at $34.95, nano-infused and designed to dissolve rather than be chewed and swallowed. The blends are built around Amanita extract together with functional mushrooms — reishi, lion's mane and cordyceps — plus blue lotus. If you want the format that is furthest from candy, this is it.

Format three: raw

Raw is the smallest and most specialized corner of the selection: mushroom product sold by weight rather than portioned into a candy or a capsule. It is not a beginner purchase and we do not pretend otherwise. Raw stock moves in and out, the selection is narrower than the rest of the mushroom edibles category, and what is on the shelf changes month to month.

Because of that, raw is an in-person conversation. Come to the Lien Road counter or call 608.630.9580 and ask what is actually in stock that week, rather than working from a page that may be a month behind the shelf.

Format four: shots

Shots are the newest format in the lineup and the one most people have not tried. A shot is a small single-serve liquid bottle — two ounces, one serving, nothing to portion and nothing to chew. They start at $9.95, which makes them the cheapest way to try a format you have not had before.

Shots exist for a specific kind of customer: someone who does not want a candy, does not want to carry a tin, and wants the whole thing to be over in one swallow. If that is you, ask for them at the counter — the shot lineup is expanding and what is on the shelf this week may not be what was there last week.

How to pick a format

The honest answer is that the formats are more alike than the packaging suggests, and the choice usually comes down to logistics rather than anything mystical:

• Buying mushroom edibles for the first time? A two-count gummy pack at $6.95 is the cheapest way to find out whether you like the format at all.
• Do not like gummy texture? Chocolate, drops or tabs.
• Need it to survive a hot car? Tabs or a shot. Chocolate is the wrong answer in August.
• Already know what you like? The twenty-count jar brings the per-piece price down.
• Want the lowest-cost first try of a new format? Shots at $9.95.

Do mushroom edibles contain THC?

No. The mushroom edibles we stock are made without THC, psilocybin or psilocin. They are a separate category from our THCA and Delta 9 products, and they are sold on a separate shelf for exactly that reason.
